Mikael Mendez (Tejanos 88 girls) 1st debut for the Rochester Rhinos netted a Goal
Rochester controlled the pace of the first half offensively, taking 12 shots and facing only six. The Rhinos first goal of the season came in the 22nd minute when forward Amanda Janosky sent a header across the length of the goal into the right side. Janosky's first career goal was soon met by her second as she struck again in the 35th off of a pass from Rhinos' forward Brittany Kinmond.
The Rhinos entered the second half with quite a bit of momentum from the 2-0 lead, keeping a large portion of the half in the offensive zone. Despite the momentum, the Pioneers managed to decrease their deficit with an unassisted goal off the foot of midfielder Holly Tyser in the 67th minute.
In the 83rd minute, Rochester sent in Mikael Mendes as a substitute for forward Amy O'Sullivan. The substitution proved fruitful in the following minute as Mendes netted a header off of the boot of Janosky to seal the Pioneer's fate. Rhinos' goalkeeper Joy McKenzie kept the net on lockdown, playing hard all 90 minutes while facing 10 shots in the victory.
The Rhinos women hit the road next week to take on the Hamilton Avalanche on Sunday, June 1st at 7:00 p.m. The ladies will return home for a Saturday matinee on June 7th at 4:00 p.m. against the Vermont Lady Voltage.
88 DFW Tejano Report
This is my last report of the season. I would like to thank everyone for letting me ramble on about our guys this fall. I am so proud of all of them and I am already looking forward to the Spring Season. Until then, I will continue to keep everyone up to date on any news from time to time. If anyone has any new that they want to get out or would like for be added or deleted from the list, please let me know.
I was fortunate enough to get down to Kerrville on Saturday to Watch Schreiner play Mississippi College and the Ozarks play Hardin Simmons in the semi-finals of the ASWC Tournament. Although Schreiner and the Ozarks could not overcome 1 goal deficits, I couldn’t have been more proud of all of our guys. I may be biased, but I believe Nick, Daniel, Ernest, Jorge, Brandon and Matt were the best players on the field. Nick made unbelievable save after unbelievable save to only allow 3 goals. Mississippi was not going to let Ernest beat them again after he scored a hat trick against them last week. As seen in the picture, he was doubled and tripled teamed all day. Jorge scored the opening goal and won every 50-50 ball as he always does. Daniel held down the defense and showed his leadership and non-stop hustle for the whole match. Brandon worked as hard as he always does and created several scoring opportunities for himself and his teammates down to the final whistle. Matt came off the bench and provided a spark to the offense with his hustle, strength and determination. Not only all that, but it gave me the opportunity to catch up with the all of the parents. Everyone is doing great and, like me, they all miss everyone. Due to the weather, I was not able to take as many pictures as I would have liked, but I am attaching one of each of the guys I got to see play.

Some of the teams played their last regular season games this weekend and the others will play theirs this week. It has been a good first year for all of the players and most of the schools finished with improved records. As I said several weeks ago, the race to host the American Southwest Conference Tournament will go down to the wire. UTD, Schreiner and the Ozarks are all in a battle along with Mississippi and Hardin Simmons to finish as the top seed. UT Tyler holds the best record, but is not eligible to host this season. I will never pull against any of our guys, but I am hoping for UTD or Schreiner to come out on top so I can see some of the matches the first weekend in November. I can even get to Abilene if Hardin Simmons wins, but Clarksville, Arkansas or Clinton, Mississippi might be just a little too far for me.
Alex Torda - University of Dayton The Flyers traveled to the Nations Capitol on Friday for a conference battle against George Washington University . The match ended in a 1-1 draw. 88 DFW Tejano Report
On Tuesday, I was able to get out and see the UTD Comets match against Southwestern University . I did not get to talk to Camron or Russell though. Russell was used as a substitute at right midfield and he played about 40 minutes in the match. He looked good (even with the short hair) and the Comets were able to pull out a 1-0 victory on a goal in the 88th minute.
Russell Liakos and Camron Quitugua – UT Dallas UTD started out a good week by defeating Southwestern University 1-0 in a non-conference game on Tuesday. They handed conference leading Mississippi their first loss of the season on Friday by a score of 1-0. The Comets then completed their week with another home conference win against Louisiana by a score of 2-0 on Saturday. Russell was used as a substitute in all three games and Camron saw his first action in goal as a substitute on Saturday. The Comets are now a half game out of first place with a conference record of 4-1-0 and an overall record of 8-2-0. Comets Home page: http://cometsports.utdallas.edu/MSOC/MSOCMAIN.htm
Ryan Spence – Midwestern State The biggest win of the week goes to Midwestern as they knocked off number 1 ranked and defending NCAA II champions Ft. Lewis on Friday by a score of 3-1 in Wichita Falls . I am a believer in the old adage “To be the Champ, you have to beat the Champ”, so hats off to the Mustangs. It was the first loss for Ft. Lewis since the 2004 season. They then defeated Colorado School of Mines on Sunday by a score of 1-0 on a goal in the 88th minute. Those two wins should help boost their confidence through the conference and in to the National Tournament. Midwestern Home Page: http://athletics.mwsu.edu/soccerm/index.asp
Trae Harrison - Duke In a battle of ACC Powerhouses, the Blue Devils visited the 3rd ranked Maryland Terrapins on Saturday and could not overcome an early goal in a 0-1 loss. Chances are these two will see each other again in the conference tournament. You might want to set your TiVo if that happens. Duke Home page: http://www.goduke.com/SportSelect.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=4200&KEY=&SPID=1833&SPSID=22445
Blake Lankford – UT Tyler The UT Tyler Patriots got back to their winning ways by defeating McMurry on Friday by a score of 1-0 and coming back Saturday to defeat unbeaten Hardin-Simmons by a score of 3-1. They now stand at 5-1-0 in conference and 7-2-0 overall. Patriots Soccer: http://www.uttyler.edu/athletics/msoccer/index.html
Ben Smith – Texas Wesleyan The Rams split a pair of conference games at home. On Friday, they defeated Louisiana for the eighth straight time by a score of 4-1. Brandon set the tone with his third goal of the season in the ninth minute. After falling behind on an early goal on Saturday, Matt led the comeback with his first collegiate goal in the 44th minute. The Ozarks put two more away in the second half to secure a 3-1 win. The Eagles are back in the conference race after these two big wins with a record of 3-2-0 conference record and a 6-4-1 overall. (See Brandon in the picture of the week.) Ozark Eagles Home Page: http://www.ozarks.edu/athletics/msoccer/default.asp
Alex Torda - University of Dayton The Flyers traveled to Cincinnati on Saturday for a conference match against Xavier. A first half goal was not enough to overcome two second half goals by Xavier in a 1-2 loss. Alex started and played the entire game. The loss drops Dayton ’s record to 4-5 overall and 0-1 in conference. Flyers Home Page: http://daytonflyers.cstv.com/sports/m-soccer/dayt-m-soccer-body.html
Andrew Bordelon – Drury University The Panthers played a road game against the University of Missouri at Rolla on Friday and could not overcome a first half goal in a 0-1 conference loss. Andrew played 25 minutes in the first half as he battled a slight injury and came back to play the entire second half. The frustration continued on Sunday in a 0-0 tie with the University of Missouri St. Louis at home. Andrew started in the central midfield and played the entire game. The loss and tie dropped their overall record to 8-2-4 and 5-2-2 in conference. Drury is looking forward to getting some players back from injury this week and getting back on the winning track on the road in Kentucky . Panthers Home Page: http://www.drury.edu/section/section.cfm?sid=68

Ernest Villarreal, Jorge Pineda, Nick Morrison, Daniel Cortez – Schreiner University The Mountaineers won their only scheduled game this week against Texas Lutheran on Friday in exciting fashion. Jorge and Daniel started the game and Jorge recorded 3 shots with one being on goal. Nick and Ernest sat out due to minor injuries. Both should be back for this week games. The Mountaineers overall record improved to 6-2 and they move to 4-1 in conference. Schreiner’s Home Page: http://athletics.schreiner.edu/MSoccer/News/2006/090906MSOC.htm

88 DFW Tejanos Boys Report
It was another good week for the 88 Tejanos. Their College teams went a combined 13-7-2 in last week's games. One of the most interesting things is the action in the American Southwest Conference. We have nine players competing for four different Universities in the Conference. Although their beating up on each other doesn’t help our combined record, it certainly makes for some interesting matches. After the opening week of Conference play, UT Tyler is showing why they were chosen the preseason favorite, but Schreiner, UTD, and the Ozarks aren’t quite ready to concede the championship just yet. It looks like that will be a battle through the Conference Tournament. Best of luck to all in that one.
